Avoiding Viruses

Last week we talked about the importance of keeping hands clean to stop the spread of infectious diseases and bacteria. Hands are unquestionably the first port of call when it comes to good hygienic practice, but our surroundings, be it at the workplace or home, should be protected if we are to minimise the risk of cross contamination.

The best way to keep your environment as close to sterile as possible is to ensure that surfaces are cleaned frequently using hot water and soap to wash bacteria away, or an antibacterial cleaning agent to kill them. To stop the spread of germs, focus your efforts on cleaning areas where germs are more likely to spread, such as the kitchen and toilet.

We recommend using Dettol Antibacterial Spray around the home and workplace. Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser kills 99.9% of bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, MRSA and the flu virus. The gentle yet effective, non bleach and no taint spray is safe to use where food is prepared and around baby equipment, too. Dettol spray couldn’t be easier to use, simply turn the red nozzle to ON position, spray directly onto the desired surface and wipe over with a clean damp cloth and allow to dry. There’s no need to rinse.

Bacteria and viruses thrive on public transport and office buildings and can travel at alarming speeds. Just one sneeze or cough can infect people up to six feet away! Door handles, desks, stair bannisters and buttons on lifts are often laden with bacteria. A work desk can house up to 21,000 germs per square inch.

Transporting bottles of disinfectant and clean cloths everywhere you go isn’t a very practical solution, but a handy tub of wipes is. Sani Cloth 70% Wipes have been manufactured for the disinfection of non-invasive Medical Devices – making them incredibly effective at eliminating bacteria. The slim-line cannister makes them ideal for carrying around – they can be used anywhere and are particularly handy for quickly disinfecting keyboards, door handles and phones.

If you’re visiting somewhere, such as a hospital or care-home, where you know there is a high risk of contracting a flu or cold virus, a surgical mask can be an added layer of protection. Our 3-Ply spunbonded non-woven polypropylene facemask with loops, covers the nose and mouth in order to minimise the incidence of cross infection. Manufactured and inspected in accordance with Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC and European Standard EN14683:2005 Type II, these masks are designed to be used in surgical, medical, dental, food preparation and other clean or sensitive environments. You aren’t going to win any fashion awards, but you can protect yourself and your loved ones from a nasty dose of the flu.

You can’t always stop the spread of germs, but you can minimise the risks. The NHS provide a full and comprehensive guide to keeping your environment as clean as possible. Click here to read it.
